Prayer for the Evening

Vigil of the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Come, let us rejoice in Christ, our Lord!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia!

Creator Spirit, by whose aid

Psalm 781-4

Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. (Jn 2:11)

The three manifestations once woven into the liturgy of the Epiphany conclude with the wedding feast at Cana. Jesus Christ, in whom divinity and humanity are united, is himself the first and greatest sign of that full communion with God and with one another in love into which he draws us through the Eucharist. A marriage feast is a fitting context for the revelation of this mystery, for marriage is a sign of this promised communion.

Give heed, my people, to my teaching;
turn your ear to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable
and reveal hidden lessons of the past.

The things we have heard and understood,
the things our fathers have told us,
these we will not hide from their children
but will tell them to the next generation:

the glories of the Lord and his might
and the marvelous deeds he has done.

Word of God 1 Timothy 3:16

Undeniably great is the mystery of devotion,/ Who was manifested in the flesh,/ vindicated in the spirit,/ seen by angels,/ proclaimed to the Gentiles,/ believed in throughout the world,/ taken up in glory.

God chose to make known the riches of the glory of
this mystery among the Gentiles; it is Christ in you,
the hope for glory. (Col 1:27)

This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church. (Eph 5:32)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

He has mercy on those who fear him

For all who gather together to celebrate the mystery of Christ in the Eucharist,
– may we live the love revealed and communicated in this great sacrament: R/

– may their love for one another and for their families reveal to a doubting world the love of God made flesh in Jesus Christ: R/

For all who see the signs of Christ at work in the world but who cannot believe,
– may their eyes be opened to the height and depth of God’s love for them: R/
