On International Down Syndrome Day, celebrate some remarkable young people.

Today we mark International Down Syndrome Day, a time to celebrate all those individuals who have overcome the many obstacles placed before them. In order to honor these more vulnerable members of society, we wanted to share some of the most inspiring stories that have occurred during the pandemic.

These five stories remind us of the incredible drive, talent, and dedication of some extraordinary young men and women:

The Boston baker

Collette Divitto created her own bakery when faced with constant rejection in the working world. Not only is she giving employment opportunities to others with disabilities, she’s inspiring communities by baking cookies to hand out to the emergency services to thank them for their help during the pandemic.

The proud graduate

One teen graduated during the pandemic and wanted to share his news with his mom who passed away. A video of him visiting his mom’s grave and exclaiming “I did it, I did!” moved and inspired all those who saw it, and reminded them just how capable those with Down syndrome can be.

The record-breaking athlete

Chris Nikic became the first person with Down syndrome to complete the grueling Ironman triathlon. The 21-year-old pushed his body to the limit to smash expectations and show the world exactly what he can achieve, inspiring others with or without disabilities around the world.

The temptation twins

Two 7-year-old twin boys from Scotland amazed their mom (and anyone who saw the video) when they resisted digging into the chocolate that had been left tantalizingly before their eyes. While their resistance was impressive, it was the delightful dialogue and words of encouragement between the boys that melted hearts everywhere.

Toddler top model

Eleanor Manton became a model for a British clothing brand during the pandemic. The two-year-old’s beaming smile now graces the pages of JoJo Maman Bébé, showing off her natural modelling skills.
