Although we can turn to fictional comic books for examples of warrior women like Wonder Woman and Superwoman, those superheroes don’t begin to compare to the incredible women throughout the history of the Catholic Church who stood up for — and sometimes even fought for — truth, justice, and honor.

The women we highlight here are particularly interesting and come from many different backgrounds. Some were royalty, while others were peasant girls. Some were wives and moms, and others were widows. Some were ruthless, especially before they had religious conversions; others were more compassionate. Regardless of their stories, each of them responded to their own challenges and circumstances with fierce determination, courage and strength.

Here are seven courageous Catholic warrior women who can still inspire us something today.
