If you’re craving a Nativity scene that’s a little less conventional this year, and you happen to have a talent for baking, take some inspiration from this huge edible creche that stands at an impressive six feet tall. Using 224 pounds of marzipan and icing, 240 eggs, and 8.5 pints of whiskey, this scene from Christ’s birth in Bethlehem is a sweet treat that took master baker Lynn Nolan from England a full six months to make.
The creche comes with more than 20 figures, as well as a beautiful stable with a sweet baby Jesus rubbing his eyes. Surrounding the Holy Family are the white houses of Bethlehem with their tiny shutters, and market stalls that come complete with pottery, blankets, and spices. Nolan even went as far as to hand-wire the tiny homes with LED lights to give the impression of candles burning in the windows. The overall scene is staggering and gives us a little insight as to what life must have been like more than 2,000 years ago.
While Nolan spent $1,135 in ingredients, it is all for a very good cause. When she heard her local primary school, Youlgrave Church of England in Derbyshire, was in need of a new $80,000 playground, she decided to use her baking skills to lend a helping hand. Although the creche is on display in the village’s local shop, it will finally be auctioned off in pieces on December 20.
But this is not the first time Nolan has cooked up a charitable treat. She also made a replica of her village that raised $14,500 towards restoring the church roof. We can’t wait to see what her next project will be — we’d love to see a mini Vatican City with a mini Pope Francis zooming around the streets in his popemobile!
