In 2017 there has been more talk about disability, quality of life, and the value of life than perhaps ever before. An ever growing conversation has reached new heights in questions about assisted suicide and the controversy surrounding Iceland’s “elimination” of Down syndrome.
The Catholic Church has always remained strong in affirming the value and dignity of every human life, and few passages in Scripture capture this respect for life better than Psalm 139.
That reading famously says:
“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; I know that full well.”
In the the video above, we have the privilege of hearing in this psalm about the closeness and intimacy of God recited by people with a variety of cognitive and physical disabilities, reminding us all that no disability, illness, or circumstance could ever tarnish the dignity of human life. Each of us He has “knit in our mothers’ wombs,” and so our lives have worth and meaning, regardless of what any one else might think.
