A painting by Annibale Carraci, an Italian painter of the early Baroque. Despite the drama of the scene, showing the agonized Mother with her dead Son on her knees, the work exudes peace and quiet. The angels accompanying Mary are painted in warmer hues, as if they were of a different world. Upon a moment of contemplation of the main figures, one may spot on the right-hand side a thorn and nails. They are depicted so realistically that one gets the shivers thinking about the pain they inflicted on the Body of Christ. [from the collection of The Museum of Art History, Vienna]
