Church of the Assumption of Mary of Villemaur-sur-Vanne, rood screen from 1521 (Aube)
This incredible wooden rood screen recently celebrated its 500th anniversary. Unfortunately, stripping in the 1960s deprived us of its polychromy. This masterpiece of Champagne sculpture is attributed to the carpenters Thomas and Jacques Guyon. Its 26 panels illustrate, on the choir side, the life of the Virgin (flamboyant Gothic) and, on the nave side, the life of Christ (Renaissance). Some scenes are inspired by Dürer's engravings. A true work of art!
