The Descent of the Holy Spirit, Book of the Hours of Étienne Chevalier
In this illumination from the Book of the Hours of Étienne Chevalier, Fouquet depicts the story of Pentecost. The kneeling apostles gaze at the hand of God, which is emitting rays that indicate the descent of the Holy Spirit. This hand, as well as answering the prayers of the faithful, drives out the demons: panic-stricken, they flee back into the sky. In the background is medieval Paris. On the right is Pont Saint-Michel, next to the roofs of the Hôtel-Dieu and the bishop's tower. At the back is Notre Dame with its 13th-century spire.
