Selecting the right people as witnesses of your marriage is a key decision as you prepare for the big event.

The role of a witness is very important. This person will assist you in preparing for the ceremony, and will attest to the solidity of your union before God. He or she will hopefully offer support to you and your marriage for the rest of your life. Attributing this mission to a person close to you is a mark of great trust. In order to avoid making a mistake, here are a few tips to consider:

1. Let go of all social and family pressure. You shouldn’t choose your sister or a particular friend simply because they have always wanted to be a witness at your wedding. If you believe that another person is better suited to assume this role, select them instead.

2. Your witness should be someone who knows your relationship well and responds to your needs and expectations as you prepare for your wedding, as well as later on.

3. If you want your witness to provide support for your relationship, choose someone who will be truthful with you. Honesty is a very useful quality.

4. It is preferable that you choose a person who shares your values and your faith. Having a witness who can pray for your marriage is very important.

5. You might wish to choose someone who is already married rather than someone who is still single. This will allow you to rely on their marital experience. His or her precious advice can help you in building a solid and lasting relationship.

6. Finally, if you are deciding among a few people, share your expectations for and ideas about this role. The responses will make it easier to make the right choice.
