Donate

It seems these days that every organization, news outlet — cough, cough, sorry! — or even local individuals in need are asking for financial help. (Here’s our donate page!) And while your heart might want to lend a helping hand to all, when the appeals come flooding in from all directions it can feel a little overwhelming. After all, you’re torn as you want to help as many people as possible, but often you might feel financially stretched yourselves.

So how do we decide where our resources can make the best difference? (Although it’s important to remember that charitable giving doesn’t have to be financial; it can be sharing your time, know-how, or prayers.)

Here are a few practical guidelines to help you choose wisely, all while living out our call to love our neighbors.

1
Start with your values and interests

Before you dive into the sea of charities, take a moment to reflect on what matters most to you. Whether it’s caring for the poor, supporting education, protecting the environment, or nurturing community life, let your values guide you. Catholic teaching should remind you that every gift should be an expression of love and solidarity, so choose causes that resonate with you on a personal basis.

2
Do Your Homework

It might not be as exciting as browsing online shopping deals, but a little research goes a long way. Look for organizations that are transparent about their goals, methods, and finances. Tools like Charity Navigator or local parish recommendations can be incredibly helpful. When you know how an organization spends your donation, you can feel confident that you’re making a wise investment in God’s work.

3
Look for Accountability and Impact

In a perfect world, every donation would transform lives instantly. Since that’s not always the case, seek out charities that show measurable impact. Does the organization share stories of change? Are they accountable with regular reports? A trustworthy charity won’t shy away from letting you know where your money goes.

And in fact, certain sponsorship programs that some of our team members have been signed up to for years, such as Don Bosco Children’s Ministriesor Unbound give you regular updates on where your money goes. It feels so tangible when you see the child you sponsor going off to school, receiving much-needed supplies, and thriving thanks to your donations.

4
Consider Local and Global Needs

It’s wonderful to feel you can help people far and wide. However, sometimes, the answer is closer to home. Local organizations often have a direct impact on your community, while global charities can address issues on a broader scale. Ask yourself: Do I want to see my donation help a neighbor right around the corner, or am I more passionate about tackling a larger, worldwide problem? (Or maybe a bit of both!)

5
Ask for Recommendations

Don’t hesitate to ask friends, family, or your parish community for advice. Often, a conversation over coffee can reveal hidden gems — organizations that might not have flashy websites but have been doing wonderful work for years. There’s wisdom in collective experience, and sometimes the best advice comes from those who have already taken the leap. Some organizations are sponsored by or affiliated with the universal Church, which is a recommendation in itself.

6
Trust Your Gut (and Your Prayer)

After you’ve done your research and listened to recommendations, take a moment to pray and reflect. Trusting your intuition is part of living your faith authentically. Sometimes you just feel that a particular cause is calling to you, and that inner nudge can be a powerful guide in your decision-making.

7
Balance Generosity with Stewardship

Our Catholic tradition calls us to be generous, but it also reminds us that we are stewards of our resources. It’s not about giving until you have nothing left — it’s about thoughtful, balanced generosity. Consider what you can realistically offer without compromising your family’s needs, and remember that every little bit counts. Remember Christ’s teaching on generosity and ask yourself if you’re being as generous as you can be.

8
Keep It Joyful

Finally, let your giving be an act of joy rather than a burden. Even when you’re carefully choosing where your donations go, maintain a lighthearted spirit. A little humor and grace can transform the sometimes bewildering world of charitable appeals into a meaningful journey of faith. After all, generosity isn’t about perfection — it’s about love in action.

In a world brimming with opportunities to help, our challenge is to be both discerning and joyful. When we choose charities that align with our values and have a clear impact, we live out our faith in a practical way. And remember, every donation — big or small — is a step toward making the world a little brighter. Happy giving!
