New Australian ambassador to the Holy See named

Australia's new representative to the Vatican is a life-long Catholic who has defended religious freedom and opposed euthanasia.

The prime minister of Australia has selected a new ambassador to represent the nation in matters regarding the Holy See. The post was filled by the Honorable Keith Pitt, a former member of Parliament, on February 16, 2025. 

According to Melbourne Catholic, the appointment was welcomed by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, who called it a prestigious role that indicated the distinguished service of Pitt to the nation. The bishop assured the incoming ambassador of the conference’s “support and prayers” as he begins his new position.

Archbishop Costelloe said that Pitt’s appointment “to this significant diplomatic position underscores the trust and confidence placed in him to represent Australia’s interests on the global stage. His experience and insights will undoubtedly serve him well as he navigates the complexities of international diplomacy.”

From 2013 until 2025, Pitt represented the people of Hinkler in Queensland, in Parliament. During his tenure he held a variety of roles, including Minister for Resources and Water, during which time he showed a devotion to public service and policy development. A lifelong Catholic, Pitt and his wife Allison are the proud parents of three children. 

The report notes that he is expected to be complementary in the position due to his Catholic faith and his previous efforts to support Catholic causes. During his time in politics, he has championed religious freedom protections, opposed the government takeover of the Calvary Hospital, and opposed euthanasia.
