If you find yourself feeling envious of a neighbor or resentful of a potential romantic rival, these pertinent quotes from Scripture are must-reads.

Jealousy is an emotion that almost everyone experiences at some point in life. It often arises when we perceive that someone else has something we desire, or think we desire — whether it’s a relationship, material wealth, or recognition.

While it’s a natural reaction, jealousy can become corrosive if left unchecked, as Pope Francis reminded us early in his papacy. It can cloud our judgment, strain our relationships, and prevent us from appreciating the blessings in our own lives. Jealousy can also lead to negative behaviors, like resentment and bitterness, that harm not just ourselves, but also the people around us.

Fortunately, the Bible offers wisdom to help us navigate and overcome feelings of jealousy. Therefore if you need a little guidance of encouragement in overcoming jealous thoughts, read these five essential quotes from Scripture:

1
Proverbs 14:30

“A tranquil mind gives life to the body, but jealousy rots the bones.”

This verse vividly illustrates the destructive power of jealousy. It not only affects our relationships but also disturbs our inner peace. Cultivating a tranquil, content heart is vital to our well-being, whereas allowing jealousy to fester can erode our happiness and harm us emotionally and spiritually. This verse encourages us to pursue peace in our thoughts and actions.

2
James 3:16

“For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice.”

James reminds us that jealousy can breed chaos and negativity in our lives. It leads to conflict and can disrupt the harmony of our relationships. By recognizing that jealousy contributes to disorder, we are called to seek humility and to act out of love rather than competition. This verse encourages us to reflect on how our jealousy might be influencing our actions and decisions.

3
1 Corinthians 13:4

“Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, love is not pompous, it is not inflated.”

In this well-known passage often read during a marriage ceremony, St. Paul describes the attributes of true love, emphasizing that genuine love does not include jealousy. By contrasting love with jealousy, this verse calls us to adopt a spirit of generosity and patience in our relationships. It reminds us that when we truly care for others, there’s no room for envy — only kindness and support.

4
Galatians 5:26

“Let us not be conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another.”

Paul’s letter to the Galatians urges us to avoid the pitfalls of pride and envy. This verse teaches that jealousy can stem from a desire to compete with others or to feel superior, which ultimately damages our relationships. Instead, we are called to live humbly and peacefully with one another, focusing on building others up rather than comparing ourselves to them.

5
Psalm 37:1-3

“Do not be provoked by evildoers; do not envy those who do wrong. Like grass they wither quickly; like green plants they wilt away. Trust in the Lord and do good that you may dwell in the land and live secure.”

This Psalm encourages us to keep our trust in God rather than becoming envious of others who seem to succeed through dishonesty or wrongdoing. It reminds us that earthly success can be fleeting, and our focus should be on doing good and living according to God’s will. By placing our trust in God, we find security and peace that jealousy cannot provide.

As you can see, dealing with jealousy requires mindfulness, humility, and trust in God’s plan. These passages remind us of the harm that jealousy can cause and encourage us to adopt a spirit of love, patience, and faith. By reflecting on these wise words, we can begin to transform our thoughts and actions, moving away from envy and towards a life filled with peace and contentment.
