Julian Grantz is back with another exciting single to pump us up for a greater album release planned for later this year. Her latest single, “The Chosen,” (no relation to the hit series on the life of Christ by the same name), is a delightfully upbeat piano-driven tune that really shows off Grantz’s vocal flexibility in a wonderful show of intricate songwriting.
Musically, “The Chosen” may be the most advanced song released by this young and prolific songwriter. On her social media pages, Grantz notes that she’s a fan of Paul McCartney, and we suspect she’s taken a cue from him, as “The Chosen” feels like its actually several songs put together, with the melody veering in several different directions that all seem to perfectly fit the song’s bouncing rhythm. We especially liked the bridge section, when she layered her own vocals to add to the musical texture.
Lyrically the song is no less impressive, as Grantz fits a whole lot of words into four minutes. She sings of her own awe at being chosen to become one of the flock, an honor she notes she never felt worthy of, but is no less deserving. She is especially talented at using dynamics to illustrate her lyrics, singing tenderly on her lines that express trepidation, while growing loud and bold when she sings “I’m one of the chosen.”
In the music video, Grantz spends a cloudy day wandering around a beach and the surrounding docks. One of the things we love so much about Juliana’s style is the absolute joy she seems to find in practicing her craft, and it shows in the video, as she’s clearly having a ball. It’s always a wonderful sight to see a young adult identify their vocation and enjoy the satisfaction that following one’s calling brings.
Juliana has hinted to Aleteia that she’s preparing to release her first full-scale album in 2024. Be sure to follow this exciting young Catholic musician on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube so you don’t miss the release.
