The Vatican Museums have taken a significant step towards becoming more family-friendly with the introduction of “Capture Nature” in the Vatican Gardens. Starting this past Saturday, July 13, this innovative guided tour is designed specifically for families, offering a unique opportunity to spend quality time together while exploring the natural beauty of the Pope’s Gardens.
Inspired by Pope Francis’ 2015 Encyclical Laudato Si’, the tour aims to raise awareness among both adults and children about the importance of protecting Creation and safeguarding the environment. This new initiative enriches the museums’ array of family-oriented activities, blending education, recreation, and faith in a captivating outdoor setting.
Every Saturday through October 26, families can take the two-hour journey led by expert educators through the Vatican’s “green lung.” The itinerary includes visits to the Biblical Garden, the Wood, the English Garden, and various fountains and landmarks favored by the pontiffs. Participants will also explore the papal coats of arms and hear numerous anecdotes and curiosities about these historic sites.

What sets this tour apart is its interactive approach. Children and parents alike will enjoy games, workshops, and playful experiences that bring the tour to life. Activities include a treasure hunt, creating a Vatican “masterpiece” using the rubbing technique, discovering turtles, identifying biblical plants, and learning about the “Wood Wide Web and the Family of Trees.”
Additionally, the “Rubbish or Nature?” game educates participants on distinguishing natural products from synthetic ones.
This outdoor education experience is designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the environment, aligning with Pope Francis’ call for the Care of our Common Home. The tour is available in both Italian and English and caters to families with children aged 6 to 12.
