Carlo’s canonization date still on hold

Despite the great anticipation to know the date for Blessed Carlo Acutis’ canonization, Pope Francis merely said at the consistory on this July 1, 2024, that it will be held “at a date to be determined.”

Eleven other Blesseds will be canonized on October 20, the Pope explained.

Since May 23, 2024, when the Vatican’s Dicastery for Saints’ Causes announced that another miracle had been attributed to the intercession of Carlo Acutis (1991-2006), the faithful have been wondering when the official canonization will occur.

It was expected that the announcement would come today, at the “ordinary” public consistory that took place at 9 am in the Vatican Consistory Hall.

Those to be canonized on October 20 are:

• Manuel Ruiz López and seven companions, of the Order of Friars Minor, and Francis, Mooti and Raphael Massabki, lay faithful, martyrs;
• Joseph Allamano, priest, founder of the Institutes of the Missionaries of the Consolata and the Missionary Sisters of the Consolata;
• Marie-Léonie Paradis (born: Virginie Alodie), foundress of the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Holy Family;
• Elena Guerra, foundress of the Congregation of the Oblates of the Holy Spirit, known as the Sisters of Saint Zita.

Pope Francis has just confirmed that Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati will “be a saint soon”; the Pope was speaking at the Vatican on June 24, 2024, in a meeting with around 350 delegates from the Roman Charity association Circolo San Pietro (the Circle of St. Peter). 

This has led some Vatican watchers to believe that the two young Italians — Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati — will be canonized together in the midst of the big year of celebrations what will be the Jubilee 2025.

Pier Giorgio Frassati was born in the Piedmont region of Italy on April 6, 1901. He devoted his life to serving the poor, before dying of polio in 1925 at age 24.

Carlo Actuis was born in London on May 3, 1991, to Italian parents who moved the family to Milan when Carlo was 3 months old. He was especially devoted to the Eucharist, and died in 2006 of leukemia at age 15.
