The Simeon and Anna retreat is a testament to the vital role of the elderly in the Catholic community, offering them a space to renew their spirits and find deeper meaning in their later years.

A new retreat, Simeon and Anna, has been launched in Spain specifically for Catholics over the age of 70. This unique spiritual retreat aims to emphasize the meaning of eternal life and give participants a renewed sense of purpose.

As explained by Nicolás de Cárdenas in the note originally published by ACIPrensa, the retreat is the brainchild of Javier Siegrist, pastor of Santo Cristo de la Misericordia in Boadilla del Monte, in the Diocese of Getafe. Known for his involvement in other retreats, Siegrist saw a gap in spiritual offerings for the elderly and felt called to fill it.

Inspired by the Gospel of Luke, in which the elderly Simeon and the prophetess Anna praise the Lord in the temple, the retreat is designed to help seniors recognize their invaluable role in their families and communities. The retreat’s pace is intentionally slower to accommodate all participants — some of whom are even in their 90s — comfortably. The retreat includes engaging visual content and uplifting testimonies designed to inspire hope and joy.

Rekindling hearts

As explained by ACIPrensa, the inaugural retreat drew 33 participants — a turnout considered a success. This initiative is particularly innovative and important, especially as many older people experience loneliness and struggle with distorted teachings about God and spiritual life. Ultimately, the retreat seeks to rekindle hearts and instill hope by reminding participants of God’s infinite mercy and love.

The Simeon and Anna retreat is a testament to the vital role of the elderly in the Catholic community, offering them a space to renew their spirits and find deeper meaning in their later years.
