If you want to honor the Blessed Mother by including her name for your newborn son, here are some wonderful ideas.

Today is the feast day of St. Josemaria, the priest who founded Opus Dei. While honoring the 20th-century saint we thought we’d take a look at other saints whose names would work rather well if they also gave a nod to the Virgin Mary.

These combinations integrate the name Mary in a way that highlights the virtues and legacy of the saint, while also creating names that are both meaningful and harmonious.

1
Joseph-Mary

Though we are celebrating St. Josemaria, for simplicity’s sake we will list the anglicized version of these names. Although pairing husband and wife may seem obvious, it’s a particularly strong choice as Joseph was the foster father of Jesus. He is known for his righteousness, humility, and his role as the protector of the Holy Family.

2
Francis-Mary

St. Francis of Assisi was the founder of the Franciscan Order and is known for his love of animals and nature, as well as his dedication to a life of poverty and humility.

Why it works: Francis is a timeless name that complements Mary well, reflecting a sense of peace and simplicity, and by choosing Francis you’d be giving a nod to the current pontiff.

3
Anthony-Mary

St. Anthony of Padua was a Portuguese Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order, known for his powerful preaching and expert knowledge of scripture. He’s also a very popular intercessor among the faithful around the world.

Why it works: Anthony is a strong, classic name that blends seamlessly with Mary, offering a peaceful and dignified combination.

4
Thomas-Mary

St. Thomas Aquinas was an Italian Dominican friar and theologian, renowned for his influential works in philosophy and theology. However, there are a countless number of impressive Thomases in the history of the Church, including St. Thomas More.

Why it works: Thomas is a solid, traditional name that pairs well with Mary, giving a sense of wisdom and stability.

5
Patrick-Mary

You’ll know St. Patrick as the patron saint of Ireland, known for his missionary work and for bringing Christianity to Ireland. He is so popular among the Irish that his name is often chosen for their little ones.

Why it works: Patrick is a strong, approachable name that complements Mary, evoking a sense of courage and missionary zeal.

6
Michael-Mary

St. Michael the Archangel is known as a protector and leader of the army of God against the forces of evil.

Why it works: Michael is a powerful and enduring name that pairs well with Mary, symbolizing protection and strength. It’s also a great choice for anyone that appreciates a little alliteration.

7
Gabriel-Mary

St. Gabriel the Archangel is known for delivering important messages from God, including the Annunciation to Mary.

Why it works: Gabriel is a gentle yet strong name that blends beautifully with Mary, reflecting a sense of divine communication and grace.

8
Benedict-Mary

St. Benedict of Nursia is known as the father of Western monasticism and the author of the Rule of St. Benedict, a guide for monastic living.

Why it works: Benedict is a distinguished name that pairs elegantly with Mary, suggesting a life of order and devotion. As the name of the late pontiff Benedict XVI, it would also be a lovely choice to honor him and keep him in your family’s hearts.
