A brand-new Christian artist just blew us away with her very first release. Megan Woods came out of nowhere to release her first single, “The Truth,” and we can already tell from her tremendous vocals that she’s here to stay.
The music video opens with a brief scene that depicts bullying, before launching into the song. From the first note it’s clear that Woods is in possession of an enormous voice, which gets even grander during the dramatic chorus sections — all the while peppering in quick melismatic flares that make each verse more interesting than the last.
The sentiments found in the lyrics are just as exceptional as the voice that sings them. Woods encourages those who have been hurt by the words of others to find comfort in the love and acceptance of God. With a vocal performance powerful enough to rival Lauren Daigle, Woods sings:
The truth is I am my Father’s child
I make Him proud and I make Him smile
I was made in the image of a perfect King
He looks at me and wouldn’t change a thing
The truth is I am truly loved
By a God who’s good when I’m not good enough
I don’t belong to the lies, I belong to You
And that’s the truth
On her webpage, Woods explains that while she was raised Christian, she did not flourish in her faith right away. The topic of “The Truth” is very personal to Woods, as for years she suffered emotional abuse at the hands of someone close to her. When she was feeling as though she was in her most desperate moment, one of the closest people in her life had a near death experience and told her, “Megan, Jesus Christ is real.”
This interaction had a profound impact on Woods, who found her way back to church and began to thrive as a worship leader. This led her to discern her calling as a Christian music artist. She wrote:
“It was the most intense feeling I’ve ever experienced. It wasn’t like God was poking me, He was grabbing me by the shoulders and calling me to something larger than I could even imagine. Now I want nothing more than to tell people about Jesus through my music and share the story of the work God has done in my life.” The debuting singer added, “When God called me to Him and I started writing songs about Jesus, my life completely changed.”
