Here's a little help for people if they're feeling ill=at-ease as they head to the beach.

One of the things about summer means that the swimming pool or the beach beckons. While this is a great opportunity to go and have some family fun, it’s not always easy if you’re feeling a little (or a lot) self-conscious about your body.

This critical focus on the body has certainly been exacerbated in recent years due to the constant images of so-called “perfection” shared on social media. For some people, if they don’t feel they’re Insta-perfect, then they avoid stepping out into the sun and enjoying themselves.

Thankfully help is at hand to put things in perspective. These verses from Scripture offer reassurance and a reminder of our inherent worth and beauty as seen through the eyes of faith, providing comfort and inspiration when dealing with body image concerns.

I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you know.” Psalm 139:14

This verse reminds us that we are beautifully and intentionally created by God. Understanding that our bodies are a part of God’s wonderful works can help us appreciate our own unique beauty and feel less self-conscious.

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Knowing that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit can encourage us to treat ourselves with respect and care. This perspective can help shift focus from criticism to gratitude and reverence for our bodies.

But the Lord said to Samuel: Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

This verse teaches us that God values our inner qualities over our outward appearance. When feeling self-conscious, it’s comforting to remember that our true worth is found in our hearts and character.

You are altogether beautiful, my love; there is no flaw in you.” Song of Songs 4:7

This poetic expression of love can be seen as a reflection of how God views us. Embracing the idea that we are seen as flawless and beautiful in God’s eyes can help combat feelings of inadequacy about our bodies.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8

Focusing on positive and uplifting thoughts can transform our mindset. When we feel self-conscious, shifting our thoughts to what is lovely and worthy of praise can help us develop a more positive and appreciative view of ourselves.
