Earlier this year, Katy Nichole broke onto the music scene with a hit song “In Jesus’ Name.” Now, this 22-year-old singer/songwriter has wasted no time filling out her repertoire as she has released her first holiday single in her debut year: “O What a King.”
“O What a King” is an imaginative new Christmas song sung from the perspective of the Blessed Mother. In the first verse Nichole touches on Mary’s own astonishment at having been chosen to bear the son of God, while the second verse describes Mary’s wish to protect her newborn from harm while acknowledging his heavenly mission.
These emotional verses are tied together with a sentimental chorus that marvels at the kingliness of Jesus. Maintaining the character of Mary throughout, the lyrics of the chorus are as worshipful as they are matronly, with Nichole noting that “the world will call you Jesus, I will call you son.”
The song reaches its peak during the bridge section, where Nichole really shows off her range. The artist is supported by a small choir that fills out the music nicely. All in all, this is an excellent second showing from this freshman Christian artist. Nichole continues to release genuine songs of faith that have us excited for the long and fruitful career she’s started on.
Katy Nichole
Katy Nichole wasn’t on anyone’s radar in 2021. She burst onto the music scene in 2022 with a simple song that she posted on TikTok. The song was a beautiful lilting tune that went viral in short order and just a few months later she was on the top of the Christian music charts with her first single, “In Jesus’ Name.”
Of the song and the providence that led to its success, Nichole told Movie Guide:
“I had a moment with God, where I just felt Him asking me to go to my keyboard and play something. It turned into the verses of the song. It was really one of those moments where I was like, ‘This is what I need to hear, so maybe someone else is going to need to hear this, as well.’”
