"Root, root, root for the Phillies, if they don't win it's a shame!" Sister John Magdalen led the 3rd-grade class in the rousing song.

This past Sunday, the Philadelphia Phillies thrilled fans by beating the San Diego Padres in an unexpected 4-3 victory. The surprising win secured their place in the World Series for the first time since 2009.

Shortly before this triumphant game that left the city celebratingWPVI News caught up with some of the team’s biggest fans — the Pre-K-8th grade students at the St. Matthew School, which is located very close to their home team’s stadium.

News cameras stopped by the third-grade class where veteran Principal and fervent Phillies fan Sister John Magdalen led them in song:

“Root, root, root for the Phillies, if they don’t win it’s a shame!”

Sister Magdalen then took the cameras on a tour of the school, where photos of a few favorite players decorate the hall. She also showed off her large collection of Phillies bobblehead dolls: “I have Harry Kalas here and Charlie Manuel there.”

The principal explained that she’s been a fan since she was a teenager. “It’s a good spirit builder … it unites us and everybody’s happy and celebrating.”

At the end of the tour, she said goodbye to the cameras with a twinkle in her eye: “We know God is a Phillies fan, so it’s okay that we pray for the Phillies.”

It’s no doubt Sister Magdalen, her students and fans everywhere will be tuning in this Friday night to watch their team play Game I of the National League Championship Series (NLCS) World Series in Houston.
