Drama begins to unfold in the first glimpse of The Chosen’s third season

J-P Mauro - published on 10/27/22

“The honeymoon phase is over; now the characters all have to deal with the costs and occasional confusions of following the Messiah.”

The highly anticipated third season of the hit series on the life of Christ, The Chosen, has released its first trailer in anticipation of its upcoming theatrical release. The new season will premiere with the first two episodes in a five-day screening from November 18-22, 2022.

From the trailer, we can see that this season will expand the cast by introducing the character of Judas (Luke Dimyan), as well as introduce some of the obstacles that will present challenges to the apostles. Jesus (Jonathan Roumie) warns his followers that they will face increasingly harsher persecution as they conduct their ministries, impressing upon them to be prepared to put their lives on the line in the service of their mission.

“Honeymoon phase” ends

The overall atmosphere of the third season looks much more tense than the previous installments of The Chosen. According to show-runner Dallas Jenkins, the theme of the upcoming season is “Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest,” a scriptural phrase sourced from Matthew 11:28. This suggests that the apostles may indeed face events that will leave them wearied by the end.

Jenkins hints that the gloves may come off this season, as the apostles will have to contend with the consequences of spreading the message of Christ in a world dominated by the Roman Empire:

“The honeymoon phase is over; now the characters all have to deal with the costs and occasional confusions of following the Messiah,” Dallas Jenkins commented in a press release.

Season 3

Season 3 will pick up right where season 2 ended, with the Sermon on the Mount. Viewers will see the reactions of the public and Roman officials to Christ’s teachings, as well as how the Sermon on the Mount affected society as a whole. Meanwhile, the characters around Christ will contend with other challenges. The press release notes several plot lines that will ensue:

“After Jesus completes a sermon that turns the world upside down, all 12 disciples (including newcomer Judas) are ready to follow him to the ends of the earth. But problems remain. Matthew wrestles with estrangement from his family. Andrew visits an imprisoned John the Baptist. Mary and the women must find a source of income. Simon and [his wife] Eden face the costs of following Jesus.”

Theaters across the US will be screening the premier of The Chosen, which promises to be a unique event appropriate for entire families. For a complete list of participating theaters, visit Fathom Events.
