St. Gregory of Nyssa (+395):
God raises and sustains our flagging hopes. He rescued Peter from drowning, making the sea into a firm surface beneath his feet. He does the same for us. The hands of the Word of God are stretched out to us when we are out of our depth, buffeted and lost in speculation. Grasped firmly in his hands, we shall be without fear. When we keep away from wrong paths on our journey, our mind begins to be aware of the true meaning of reality … if we avoid trivial things. We receive within ourself the Lord in accordance with our capacity.
