New biopic on Blessed Stefan Wyszyński promises to be a real blockbuster

J-P Mauro - published on 10/21/22

After bringing Mother Teresa to the silver screen, Fathom Events is presenting the life story of the man who paved the way for JPII.

The latest addition to Fathom Events’ “Saint Series” looks like a genuine blockbuster. The folks who brought us the hit film Mother Teresa: No Greater Love are now presenting the life and works of Blessed Stefan Wyszyński, the Polish cardinal who opposed the totalitarian communist regime of the mid-20th century, in their latest feature film, Prophet.

This Polish-language film will be the first feature to present the life story of Blessed Stefan Wyszyński, who was beatified in 2021. Filmmaker Michal Kondrat will introduce audiences to the heroic Polish prelate of the Catholic Church who was unwavering in his witness before the fierce scrutiny of the communists. The film will also touch upon the cardinal’s interactions with a young priest named Karol Józef Wojtyła, and how Wyszyński helped shape him into Pope St. John Paul II.

A story told in the context of historical events, Prophet portrays Wyszyński as an unyielding leader who stood fast against a regime that sought to disrupt and destroy the Church in Poland. This was no easy feat either, as the regime attempted to discredit and silence the prelate with a massive covert operation that involved hundreds of agents following the cardinal’s every move. In fact it was from this operation, codenamed “Prophet,” that the filmmakers drew their title.

Fathom Events describes Prophet as “a riveting story about unwavering faith, love for the human person and the fight for religious freedom that are an utterly heroic prelude to the fall of communism in Europe.”

In a press release, Michael Kondrat – for whom Prophet will be a directorial debut – suggested that the work is particularly timely considering current world events:

Prophet is going to awaken audiences to a churchman who shows the world what it means to stand against evil,” said Michal Kondrat, director and producer. “Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński’s story sets the stage for the dramatic rise of Pope John Paul II and the fall of communism in Europe. Who is this prophetic man who battled evil and saw a son of Poland rising? Audiences will get to know Wyszyński – a fascinating figure that the world should look to during the hauntingly eerie times we are currently living in.”

Prophet is set for a two-day US release, on November 15 and 17. For a full list of participating theaters near you, visit Fathom Events.
