Among the many individuals mentioned in the Bible, a man named Hur appears to have a special place as a companion of Moses and Aaron.
Hur is mentioned as a leader when Moses ascends Mt. Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments.
So Moses set out with Joshua, his assistant, and went up to the mountain of God. He told the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are with you. Anyone with a complaint should approach them.” Moses went up the mountain. Then the cloud covered the mountain.
Exodus 24:13-15
The Bible also reveals that Hur is from the tribe of Judah and he comes to the assistance of Moses in the battle against Amalek.
Joshua did as Moses told him: he engaged Amalek in battle while Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of the hill. As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight. Moses’ hands, however, grew tired; so they took a rock and put it under him and he sat on it. Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady until sunset.
Exodus 17:10-13
There are other men named Hur in the Bible, but this man is often linked to Aaron and appears to be a primary collaborator with Moses.
