In 2003, “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence sold over a million copies in the United States, and was in the Top Ten of 15 countries worldwide. Yet unbeknownst to many, the lyrics from the song were “rooted in Scripture,” as Fr. Frankie Cicero explained on TikTok recently.

As you’ll see in the video below, in a few seconds the popular priest showed the different Bible verses that influenced the lyrics.

One of the band members, Amy Lee, later shared that they didn’t want to be dubbed a Christian band, and that their music was there purely to entertain, but it doesn’t really matter. In fact, if a mainstream band leaned on Scripture for inspiration, it makes the Bible seem all the more approachable to those with little to no religious knowledge.

While the origins of the song have been spoken about before, thanks to the social media efforts of priests like Fr. Cicero today, the younger generations are getting to learn about it in a way that appeals to them. And perhaps they’ll listen to the song and unwittingly take on board some key messages from the Bible in the song that implores us to “Bring Me to Life.”
