In a podcast, the two-time IndyCar champion revealed his mom's surprising past vocation.

Will Power just won his second IndyCar championship. The Australian racer came third-place at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, giving him a full 16 point lead over his teammate, Josef Newgarden.

Although Power became champion, he credits his wife’s belief in him for giving the confidence boost he needed to make it to number one. As he shared with NBC Sports’ Marty Snider:

However, in a podcast from last year called “Dinner with Racers,” the 41-year-old also shared more about his personal life, how it’s had an impact on who he is today, and in turn, how he parents his son, 5-year-old Beau.

Power revealed that growing up, his own dad — also a racer — was quick to react and would deal out corporal punishment when he and his three brothers got up to any mischief.

This definitely had an impact on how he now responds to his own son. In fact, the racing champ shared how he never lays a finger on young Beau, and that it’s his wife who deals with any discipline.

So, while he might have inherited his father’s speedy genes, he seems to have inherited more of his mom’s calmer side, based on this interesting information he shared:

“We were very scared of dad. My mother was a nun, so she was a very peaceful sort of person … My mom left the convent … after 7 years or something ’cause it was too stressful for her, for whatever reason. I think she was like me, suffering from anxiety.”

Although Powers is unaware of how his parents met, and why his mother actually left her life as a religious sister, it seems that her peaceful ways have very much rubbed off on her racing son.
