During today’s General Audience, on the eve of the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Pope Francis paid a special tribute to motherly love: Motherly love, the Pontiff said, can save us from despair.
Speaking from St. Peter’s Square, the pope evoked the meaning of the liturgical feast of the birth of the Mother of Christ, who tenderly bound herself to her son’s mission. He then expressed his closeness to all mothers, “especially to those whose children are suffering: sick children, marginalized children.”
The bishop of Rome prayed that the mothers of young inmates would not lose hope. “Unfortunately, many people put an end to their lives while in jail; sometimes even young people,” the Pope said, while assuring that “a mother’s love can save one from this.”
“May the Virgin Mary console all mothers afflicted by their children’s suffering,” the pontiff concluded.
