Pope Francis in The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Francis praises Poland for the welcome that has been given to Ukrainians.

Pope Francis once again sent his thoughts to the Ukrainian people during the general audience on August 17, 2022. He also praised the fact that many Ukrainians have found welcome in Poland.

Nearly six months after the invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine, the Pope continues his unabating calls for peace. “My thoughts, as always, are with Ukraine. Let us not forget this martyred people,” he said at the end of his catechesis in Paul VI Hall.

Last Sunday too, after praying the Angelus, he asked Christians to pray to the Virgin Mary, “especially for the Ukrainian people.”

Addressing the Polish faithful, the Pope also spoke of the thousands of pilgrims who have come to the Marian shrine of Jasna Góra (Częstochowa) in recent days and prayed for peace in the world. “Among them are many Ukrainians who have found in your country a welcoming home,” he said, before entrusting “the destiny of Europe and the world” to the Black Madonna, venerated in this shrine.
