Pornography addiction is rampant, and sadly, many people were first exposed by accident and don’t want to be addicted.
The majority of kids are exposed to porn by age 13, usually accidentally. Young people find themselves addicted before they even fully realize the harm.
But it doesn’t have to be that way, even if someone has been exposed for a long time. One crucial tool for fighting back is the STRIVE 21-Day Porn Detox.
Almost 50,000 men have gone through STRIVE. Their message is clear: Freedom from porn addiction really is possible.
Men journeying toward freedom can find in STRIVE practical steps to take and challenges that can help them break free from porn addiction. They also find a supportive brotherhood of men on the same journey.
Best of all, STRIVE is totally free (yes, really!).
“You were born into a pornified culture. That’s not your fault,” series creator Matt Fradd says on day one of STRIVE.
“I’ve spent over a decade helping men like you find freedom from pornography. I created STRIVE because when it comes to quitting porn, I know what works. If you want to quit porn, I want to equip you with the tools you need and a brotherhood of support to help you find lasting freedom.”
Bill Donaghy, one of the creators of STRIVE, shared with Aleteia how the series was developed. Donaghy is a Senior Lecturer and Content Specialist for the Theology of the Body Institute and has decades of experience in Catholic writing, speaking, and education.
STRIVE actually arose out of a different program for men called RISE: A 30 Day Challenge with Chris Stefanick. That program was aimed at restoring a man’s identity as a beloved son, brother, a spouse, and a father.
But it quickly became apparent that certain problems were widespread. Hundreds and hundreds of comments came from men who shared their deep struggles.
“Pornography kept coming up,” Donaghy said. “We realized there was a deeper need of conversion at that level before we could talk about the deeper maturities of growing into authentic fatherhood.”
Providentially, at the same time Matt Fradd reached out to the RISE team to create a program for helping men heal from pornographic addiction. And so STRIVE was born.
“This is a broken world and a broken way of looking at other people that [many men] were born into and are constantly pressured into adopting,” Donaghy said.
But hope and freedom really are possible. The key is connecting the desire with the woman a man loves.
“The attraction, passion and desire for intimacy and for beauty within them is actually a good thing. The key is that this passion must always be connected to the person, to the beloved gift that woman is to us.”
This key unlocks the secret to breaking free of the addiction. “Our hope is that men move from using women towards authentically loving women, and loving themselves as a gift made for women,” Donaghy said.
If this sounds really hopeful and inspiring, that’s exactly the idea of STRIVE.
“This program is not condemning; it is not about a guilt trip,” Donaghy said, “It is a challenge. It’s a call for men to become who they were born to be!”
There is inherent good in men, made in the image and likeness of God. With help, the pressures and traps of pornography can be transformed.
“Through self-awareness as well as self-discipline, and above all through God’s grace, a man can turn the flames of a misguided lust into a holy fire of self-giving love for woman and for family.”
