St. Augustine of Canterbury is often credited as the “Apostle of the English,” having brought the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the region in the 6th century.
His feast day each year is an opportunity to pray for England, asking God that the Christian faith will flourish for years to come.
Almighty God, you led the English people to the gospel
by the preaching of Saint Augustine of Canterbury.
Grant that his work may last on in the Church
and bear fruit in every generation.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
