Pope: “The doctor told me not to walk … this time I have to obey”

VATICAN - POPE - YOUTH - PILIGRIMAGE

Pope Francis says his inability to get around is a "humiliation," but he's offering it up.

Pope Francis’ right knee continues to cause him pain, he said at the end of an audience at the Vatican during which he received pilgrims from Slovakia on April 30, 2022. Apologizing, as he has often done in recent weeks, for not being able to get up to greet his guests, he declared that his leg was “not good,” adding: “it does not work.”

The Pontiff then said that his doctor has asked him not to walk. “I like to walk, but this time I have to obey the doctor,” he explained while asking the pilgrims to make the “sacrifice” of going up to the platform where he was sitting to greet them. “It’s a humiliation, but I offer it for your country,” he said.

Now I will give you the blessing and we will pray together for the Lord to bless you all. And after that I will say goodbye, but there is a problem: this leg is not good, it doesn’t work, and the doctor told me not to walk. I like to go…, but this time I have to obey the doctor! That is why I will ask for the sacrifice of going up the stairs and greeting you from here sitting. It is a humiliation, but I offer it for your country. Thank you!

Pope Francis is suffering from acute knee pain which prevents him from walking normally. The situation has led to many changes in his schedule in recent months. Recently, he also had medical examinations, canceling several appointments for this reason.
