This weekend saw the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals come together to play an AFC title game. As with all big games, a star was slated to sing the national anthem to kick things off in style. However, when singer-songwriter Ashanti came up to sing the Star-Spangled Banner, she had microphone issues.

Thankfully she could rely on tens of thousands of backup singers in the crowds to come to her rescue to sing the anthem in unison. In fact, the makeshift chorus sang their hearts out so much that the microphones of the broadcasters present at the game picked up their stirring rendition.

You can catch the moment in the tweet below:

Although the Chiefs lost their game 27-24, their fans certainly did their team proud, with the following tweet demonstrating their patriotic fervor:

What is particularly lovely about this microphone fail is that it brought both teams of supporters together in musical harmony — a sense of sportsmanship at its best!

You may be wondering where patriotism fits in with Church teaching, but Doctor of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas, maintains that patriotism is indeed a virtue, linked to piety.

And you may also be interested in Aleteia’s discussion on whether Jesus Himself was a patriot, as suggested in the Bible.
