With churches closed in Quebec because of the increase of contaminations linked to the Omicron variant, the faithful and priests are getting organized. At the Notre-Dame-du-Cap Shrine, more than 100 people braved the wind and snow to attend the outdoor service.

Neither the snow nor the cold got the better of the determination of the Quebecers to attend Mass. On Sunday, January 9, close to 120 faithful gathered on the square in front of the Notre-Dame-du-Cap Shrine in Quebec to assist at Mass. This number does not take into account the other parishioners present…in their cars! Father Frédéric and Father Gilles Roberge are the two priests behind this beautiful initiative. “We are happy to have been able to live this beautiful celebration together,” they rejoiced on Facebook, sharing a few snapshots of this moment of winter communion.

In an attempt to stem the rise in infections related to the Omicron variant, Quebec has announced a series of restrictive measures that came into effect on December 31 and will remain in effect indefinitely. Among them is the closure of places of worship, including churches, except for the celebration of funerals for 25 people. If they are held outdoors and in compliance with sanitary measures, the services can be celebrated outdoors.
