I want to say to them: “Thank you, boys and girls: thank you!” and I would like to recall that mission begins with the daily witness of Christian life.

After praying the midday Angelus on the feast of the Epiphany, Pope Francis had a special word for children and youth who are active in their baptismal role as missionaries.

Epiphany in a special way is the feast of the Holy Child Missionaries, that is, of those children and boys and girls – there are many in various countries of the world – who dedicate themselves to pray and to donate their savings so that the Gospel might be proclaimed to those who do not know it.

I want to say to them: “Thank you, boys and girls: thank you!” and I would like to recall that mission begins with the daily witness of Christian life.

Pontifical Society of the Holy Childhood

A pontifical society for missionary children began in the mid-19th century, when a French bishop, Charles de Forbin-Janson wanted to help children in China, but could not personally leave as a missionary.

He asked for advice from Pauline Jaricot, the foundress of the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Jaricot will be beatified later this year.

Their exchange of ideas led to Bishop de Forbin-Janson deciding to involve the children of France so that through prayer and material cooperation, they could help the Chinese children of their same age. “One Hail Mary a day, one small coin a month” was the commitment made by every child from the first moment.

Dioceses around the world

The Missionary Childhood Association is active in dioceses around the world. See, for example, their work in Fort Worth, Texas.
