‘Christmas with The Chosen’ a smash hit, now in theaters until December 21

The holiday feature episode of the hit series on the life of Christ, 'The Chosen,' has already become one of the highest grossing movies of 2021.

The Chosen’s Christmas special is busting the block. After a hugely successful first week, Fathom Events has extended its theatrical release. After initially planning for a 10-day run beginning on December 1, the movie’s producers are now keeping it on the big screen until December 21.

Forbes has called the feature film an “overperformer” after box office crossed the $10 million mark in just one week. It is now competing with secular films like Cry Macho ($10.2 million) and The Last Duel ($10.9 million) as one of the highest grossing movies of the year.

Titled Christmas with the Chosen: The Messengers, the feature follows the events of the Nativity from the perspectives of Mary and Joseph. The film includes a 35-minute Christmas episode of The Chosen, as well as performances of Christmas music from popular Christian artists. Producers have called the spectacular, “the Christmas event of 2021.”

Denver Catholic lists the Christian personalities and musicians who perform or offer interviews and commentaries in the show:

Series creator Dallas Jenkins spoke to Denver Catholic, stating that he believes this Christmas special will resonate with Christians of all denominations. He said:

“Even though I happen to be an Evangelical,” Jenkins said, “I believe that this episode will continue the response that my Catholic brothers and sisters have had to the show so far, which is to appreciate both the lofty and epic joy that we try to capture in our love of Jesus combined with the lowly and humble beginnings of him on earth and I think there’s something we share and celebrate together.”

This week, Jonathan Roumie, who plays the role of Christ in the series, attended a theatrical showing of The Chosen in France. After the screening, he gave an interview with CBN News, in which he was asked if he ever needs to pinch himself when he sees how well The Chosen is received. He said:

“I don’t know if I pinch myself, I’m more ‘bow my head to the ground’ because I never feel that I’m worthy of the things that are happening as a result,” Roumie replied.
