A new Christmas special from the creators of the hit series on the life of Christ, The Chosen, is coming to theaters this year. Titled Christmas with the Chosen: The Messengers, the feature will follow the events of the Nativity from the perspectives of Mary and Joseph. The film will be followed by performances of Christmas music from popular Christian artists in what producers call “the Christmas event of 2021.”
Fathom Entertainment’s producers were very quiet about the project, only revealing it during a recent livestream from series creator, writer, and director Dallas Jenkins. Although he announced it in the last week of October, the event promptly shattered the distributor’s pre-sales records. In just the first 12 hours, Christmas with the Chosen had already sold $1.5 million in tickets.
The enthusiastic support that has been shown for the project has prompted Fathom to seek more theaters for the release. Originally slated to appear in 1,079 theaters, Christmas with the Chosen has already added more than 450 additional locations.
While billions of viewers enjoyed The Chosen’s second season in 2021, the creators worked on the Christmas special in secret. At roughly two hours in length, the film “shows the birth of Christ through the eyes of Mary and Joseph,” while bringing in some of the actors from The Chosen. From the trailer, featured above, we can see that the quality of the film will be on par with previous seasons of The Chosen.
Christmas concert
To round out the event, the theatrical release will include Christmas music performed by some of the biggest acts in Christian music. These include Matt Maher, Phil Wickham, Brandon Lake, For King & Country, One Voice Children’s Choir, Maverick City Music, Leanna Crawford, and many more. According to a press release, the music will be a mix of traditional and modern Christmas music. See the full list of musical acts here.
Of the release, Dallas Jenkins said:
“When we decided to do a special Christmas episode, we knew it would be the ideal moment to get this on the big screen,” said Dallas Jenkins. “It’s the first chance Chosen fans have had to gather all over the country, so we intend to make it worth it. And with all the incredible musicians assembled, this is a perfect event for inviting friends.”
Christmas with the Chosen: The Messengers will reach theaters on December 1, with screening dates continuing throughout the month. As Fathom Entertainment is still adding more dates and locations, it is worth checking their list for updates over the course of November. Tickets are also expected to be bought up fast, so don’t wait to secure your seats.
