The Catholic Church believes that no one should be forced to violate their properly formed conscience.

St. Paul VI wrote in Dignitatis Humanae, about the importance of conscience rights and how no one should force people to go against a well-formed conscience.

In all his activity a man is bound to follow his conscience in order that he may come to God, the end and purpose of life. It follows that he is not to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his conscience. Nor, on the other hand, is he to be restrained from acting in accordance with his conscience, especially in matters religious.

Here is a prayer from the USCCB for the protection of conscience rights and religious liberty.

Father, we praise you and thank you for your most precious gifts of human life and human freedom. Touch the hearts of our lawmakers with the wisdom and courage to uphold conscience rights and religious liberty for all. Protect all people from being forced to violate their moral and religious convictions.

In your goodness, guard our freedom to live out our faith and to follow you in all that we do. Give us strength to be bold and joyful witnesses.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
