St. Thérèse’s prayer for when we fail to be a saint

This prayer by St. Thérèse of Lisieux recognizes the fact that often we start out the day with good intentions, but end by falling short.

Saints are not perfect individuals who always make the right choice every single time. In reality, saints are those who recognize their own faults and continually strive to be holy, even though they often fall short.

Here is a prayer composed by St. Thérèse of Lisieux that recognizes this reality. She lived a holy life, but she wasn’t perfect. She would sometimes fall, but what made her unique was her complete trust in God. Even when she fell, she knew that God would pick her back up.

Dear Lord, Thou knowest my weakness. Each morning I resolve to be humble, and in the evening I recognize that I have often been guilty of pride. The sight of these faults tempts me to discouragement; yet I know that discouragement is itself but a form of pride. I wish, therefore, O my God, to build all my trust upon Thee. As Thou canst do all things, deign to implant in my soul this virtue which I desire, and to obtain it from Thy Infinite Mercy, I will often say to Thee: “Jesus, Meek and Humble of Heart, make my heart like unto Thine.”
