The feast of Michaelmas this week is a wonderful opportunity for you and your family to celebrate St. Michael and the other Archangels who guide and defend us.

On September 29 we’ll celebrate a holiday that’s not especially well-known anymore but has an amazing history. The feast of St. Michael and the Archangels is also known as Michaelmas and was historically commemorated with fanfare.

Michaelmas honors the Archangels, especially St. Michael, who is best known for fighting back against Satan and casting him into Hell. The feast day was traditionally an important turning point in the calendar, marking the end of summer. It was a day to enjoy harvest bounties and ask God for the strength to imitate St. Michael.

Even though this feast day is not as well known today, it’s begun to make a comeback as many Catholics seek to live more liturgically. Pro tip: This holiday is an absolute blast to celebrate, so it’s a good one to enjoy with kids!

To understand how to celebrate this feast, I went straight to the source: my friend who plans an amazing Michaelmas party at her parish every year on September 29. Here are 5 fun ways to honor this great feast day! (And don’t forget some crafts to accompany the festivities!)

Happy Michaelmas!
