Pope Francis believed his predecessor was correct in warning Europe about its lack of respect for all human life.

In an introduction to a new book, The True Europe: Identity and Mission, Pope Francis praised Pope Benedict XVI’s courageous defense of human life.

According to a CNS article published at Crux, the book “compiles selected texts by Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI on the theme of Europe. The book, currently in Italian, is one of a series of ‘selected texts’ being published by Cantagalli press and coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the European Union.”

In the introduction, Pope Francis wrote, “Beyond the many words and grandiose proclamations, today, the idea of respect for every human life is increasingly lost in Europe, starting with the loss of awareness of its sacredness, that is, precisely from the obfuscation of the awareness that we are creatures of God.”

He continued, “Benedict XVI has not been afraid over the years of denouncing with great courage and far-sightedness the many manifestations of this dramatic renunciation of the idea of creation.”

Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis has repeatedly denounced abortion and has praised the dignity of all human life, from conception to natural death.

For example, he spoke in 2014, “Unfortunately, what is thrown away is not only food and dispensable objects, but often human beings themselves, who are discarded as ‘unnecessary.’ For example, it is frightful even to think there are children, victims of abortion, who will never see the light of day.”

Pope Francis is a strong advocate for life, following in his predecessor’s footsteps.
