It was a long, record-breaking run, but Lauren Daigle’s “You Say” has finally left the #1 slot. In June, the tremendous tune dropped to #2 after nearly three years at the peak of Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs. Lauren’s laurels remain in place, however, as her new song, “Hold On To Me,” has taken its place.

“Hold On To Me” is an obvious hit from the opening notes, carefully caressed by Daigle’s cool yet smokey voice. The melody is one that feels familiar, with an easy line that is singable by the second verse. A timid organ and gospel choir only add to the hymn-like quality of the song’s structure.

The lyrics, written during the world pandemic, speak of a hope in times of desperation. Daigle’s vocals reflect on the hardships of the last year, through her phenomenal performance. The singeradds just enough grunge to her voice to sound world weary. These somber tones belie what is to come, as she soon builds the tune with her signature bombastic belting.

The simple accompaniment adds to a sense of loneliness that drives the melancholy yet hopeful lyrics:

Hold on to me when it’s too dark to see You, When I am sure I have reached the end, Hold on to me when I forget I need You, When I let go, hold me again

A hymn of hope

The words are a somber reflection on the need for God in all our lives. Daigle told American Songwriter that she wanted to do away with cliché song tropes but maintain the “lyrical depth” of a hymn. The end result is a shiver-inducing gospel song that speaks to the heart of the human experience.

In the interview with, Daigle said of the work:

“The thing I love most about this song is that it lends itself to someone who is feeling incredibly vulnerable, someone who is feeling insecure, or uncertain,” Daigle shares. “There are times we may need a reminder of who we are and that we are worthy of having joy in our lives. In moments where the future may look uncertain and unknown, this is a song of hope that any person can cling to.”
