An 11-year-old boy from Missouri, Kaleb Greenough, managed to come to the rescue of his disabled grandmother thanks to some quick thinking.
The diligent schoolboy’s grandmother, Sherri Bell, who is disabled, legally blind and needs a dialysis machine, had a bad fall. Kaleb was reluctant to move her in case he worsened the situation. He tried to call 911 but the phone wasn’t working. Thankfully, he managed to stay sufficiently calm to find an alternative solution.
He logged into his Zoom lesson with his teacher, Janel Maclean. She shared with news station KSDK that she found it odd that Kaleb was late for class and a little quiet. Even in his anxiety he was able to message his teacher and ask her to contact his mom.
Unfortunately, Maclean couldn’t get through to Kaleb’s mom, so the school principal joined the lesson to try and ascertain the gravity of the situation.
Although his teacher could tell that the grandmother was in distress, Kaleb remained in control. “He was so just kind with her … He was able to calm her,” she explained to KSDK.
However, among the communication issues, there was a further problem. When the paramedics were called they actually drove straight past Kaleb’s house. Fortunately, the hero grandson had his wits about him — he spotted a police cruiser going past his house and managed to wave them down.
The paramedics finally arrived and Bell is now “doing OK,” according to the news station.
Throughout what must have been a traumatic experience for an 11-year-old, Kaleb remained impressively calm. Parkwood Elementary School Principal Melissa Yount-Ott shared: “His confidence and his pride in the whole situation was just very, very impressive.”
While it’s wonderful to see kids use their initiative, it’s also lovely to see the love of a grandson to save his grandma.
