“Given the prolongation of the health crisis and the still uncertain scenario, we inform you that, for the moment, the Vatican Museums and Gardens will reopen to the public from Monday, May 3,” reads a post on the website of the Vatican Museums. The press release, signed by Vatican City State, is dated March 31, 2021.
A certain number of rules will also be reinstated so that the visits take place in the best conditions of health security. For example, it will remain compulsory to reserve tickets and to show up in front of the entrance to the Museums at the previously chosen time.
The Vatican Museums closed for the third time in a year on March 15 after Italy adopted a series of measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. The Museums – which usually welcome more than 6 million visitors a year – had cautiously reopened on February 1, 2021.
In Europe, Italy is paying one of the heaviest prices in the face of the pandemic with more than 112,000 deaths recorded to date. The Rome region is currently in the orange zone which means that catering services are closed as well as shops and museums. Travel outside the Lazio region is also prohibited. These health restrictions could be eased beginning on April 30.
