The new community initiative seeks to reduce hunger and promoting solidarity.

Throughout 2020 there were an incredible number of initiatives led by groups and individuals to help those in need — from teenagers caring for their elderly neighbors to teachers going to extremes to help their struggling students. And now there are reports of a new trend popping up across the States to combat hunger.

In 2020, a shocking one in six Americans went hungry, according to a report by the BBC. With continued financial instability the hunger isn’t going away anytime soon. So local communities are doing what they do best in these situations: they’re looking out for each other.

Colorfully painted fridges are being placed on streets, with neighbors placing food for others to eat, or helping themselves to what’s inside. It’s a very simple gesture that is having a positive impact on those struggling to feed their families.

The fridges are plugged into local stores or family homes and run 24/7. There are no questions asked; they are simply there to serve the community. While the initiative is very practical, it also is a beautiful reminder of one of the most simple commandments: Love thy neighbor.
