Those in education have had their hands full dealing with the complications of COVID-19. Yet one high school principal, Henry Darby, decided to add even more to his busy schedule by taking on an extra job to help those in the community.
In the last couple of years, the principal has witnessed students struggling to pay bills and sleep well, so he felt compelled to do something to help. “I was taught if your hands find something to do, do it. So I came to myself and said, ‘Perhaps I need another job in terms of part-time,'” explained the principal of North Charleston High School to ABC 11.
Last summer he decided to roll up his sleeves and stack shelves three nights a week, from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., at Walmart in order to donate his salary to his students in need. The extraordinary move inspired others: Walmart added an extra $50,000 to his efforts and people around the country also donated to his cause.
The South Carolina principal has no intention of giving up his part-time job. While still wanting to help those in his community, he also feels wants to thank Walmart for giving him the opportunity to help others.
Described as the community’s “guardian angel” Darby is teaching his students perhaps the most important life lesson they’ll ever receive: to selflessly help those in need.
