One driven Catholic makes cartoon that teach kids about their faith

"Catholic Kids Media" is filling the faith formation gap left by the world pandemic.

As we enter the second year of pandemic restrictions, religious education is a prime concern for parents. With religious ed programs largely upended, faith formation has fallen on the parents’ shoulders. Thankfully, however, there’s a wonderful YouTube channel that is the perfect supplement for teaching the Catechism.

“Catholic Kids Media” is the brain child of 21-year-old Isabella D’Angelo, who writes, records, and produces the show. Her videos offer faithful accounts of the scriptures, designed in line with the Catechism. Every Wednesday, D’Angelo posts another high quality cartoon to the channel, featuring Bible narratives, hymn sing-alongs, and guided prayers.

On Facebook, D’Angelo wrote of her mission:

“Catholic Kids Media is an effort to evangelize the culture by providing parents and teachers with quality resources. This channel helps kids understand the strange and wonderful thing that is Catholicism, so that they might live Christ-centered lives.”

Labor of love

In an interview with Catholic Courier, Isabella explained that the project was born from her own upbringing. Every Sunday, her family would sit together after Mass and listen to podcasts from Catholic personalities like Bishop Robert Barron. She wished to share such an educational influence with kids around the world, so she settled on a cartoon format to appeal to a younger audience.

D’Angelo went on to note that she designs all the characters, writes the scripts, edits the videos, and even composes the music herself. In order to ensure the most accurate reflection of the Catholic faith, Isabella meets formally with trained catechists, seminarians and a priest. In addition, she runs the scripts by her parents before publishing.

“Catholic Kids Media” is an evangelization project at its core. In order to cater to as many people as possible, D’Angelo produces each video in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Maltese. She said that her tracking shows that people from as many as 93 countries have tuned in to the channel.
