Each new year reminds us of how quickly time passes. It provides for us a great opportunity to reflect on our own lives and question whether we are “seizing the day” in the spiritual realm.
The 19th-century book The Catholic Monitor provides such a reflection to consider.
What is time compared with eternity! It is but as a dream, as a tale that is told as waters that pass away. How short and transient is the period of human life! How soon do its years and days elapse! The business of it however is vast and important. It is the season allotted me, in order to my preparation for a future — an everlasting state. Let me frequently and seriously think of the shortness and uncertainty of time. Considering how much of it is past … let me redeem the time in a faithful attention to the great duties and ends of life in their reference to the glory of God, the honor of my Redeemer, my own salvation, and the best interests of my fellow men.
As we look forward to the future, may we not forget the present moment and how every moment that passes can bring us closer to God.
