This beautiful version of "Buenos Dias, Paloma Blanca" resonates even more strongly this year.

The University of Notre Dame Folk Choir was not going to let the pandemic ruin its celebrations on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadeloupe this year. Already choirs have been affected greatly by COVID-19, as singing is considered a means of easily spreading the virus. So on this joyful occasion the choir looked for a little help.

Thanks to the choir from Notre Dame Campus Ministry, Coro Primavera, the two choirs joined together to sing “Buenos Dias, Paloma Blanca,” or “Good Morning, White Dove.” As the folk choir shared on their Facebook page, this is a hymn traditionally sung on this feast day, to welcome and honor Our Lady.

Alexandra Guevara-Stevens from the class of 2022 touchingly shared:

Today, the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Her apparition to Saint Juan Diego was monumental to the church, leaving an imprint of her love not only on the tilma of St. Juan Diego but on the course of history of the church in the Americas. Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego in December of 1531, giving him a tender message of love as his mother.

Our Lady of Guadalupe continues to inspire the faith of many, including my own. In today’s gospel reading from Luke, we find Mary at the time of the annunciation when the Angel Gabriel appeared to her to give her the message that she would bear the son of God. Mary gave her yes, knowing that the will of God was far greater than hers. Her yes inspires my own as I ask for her intercession to trust God and His plans for me. And her witness of love draws me closer to Jesus as I ask her to teach me how to love Him better.

I pray that on this feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, at the ending of a hectic year, you may find peace and warmth under the protection of her mantle.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us!

Although the choirs had to contend with wearing masks, their message and their voices were just as beautiful and heartfelt. So take a moment in your day to enjoy this hymn that is so apt as we approach Christmas.
