And the results show a really positive shift in priorities.

A recent study of 2,000 Americans revealed that 8 out of 10 were desperate to hear some positive news before 2020 finishes. According to the survey, 75% of people felt the barrage of negative news has had a negative effect.

Yet, the survey revealed that many of those questioned had taken matters into their own hands: 70% made a point of doing at least one positive activity a day during quarantine. Interestingly and very positively, the number one goal of those surveyed was to make someone else smile. And just over a third were determined to make loved ones have a giggle and share positive news.

Favorite mood boosters

To bring a little self-cheer, individuals chose to either switch on a favorite film, indulge in a favorite snack, go for a walk, or call a friend. However, 38% chose to cuddle up to their dog for a little pick-me-up.

While singing in the shower and a solo dance party made the list, it’s great to see that 38% of those taking part in the poll decided to give to charity, and 28% were finding ways to volunteer safely.

A kind-hearted nation

In the survey carried out by One Poll, the results found just how philanthropic Americans are in times of need. Although people tried to give themselves a bit of a boost, a lot of the time this came from helping others. Out of the 2,000 surveyed, 60% believe that COVID has increased their desire to help out in their community. A similar number maintained their communities had come closer together thanks to the pandemic. Encouragingly, a huge 78% revealed that there was a stronger desire to give back to those in the community.

As donating to causes dealing with the pandemic was close to the hearts of those being questioned, the results showed that Americans are using COVID-19 to change their mindsets:

“Right now, we have an opportunity to come together and take what has been one of the hardest years in our lives, and turn it into one of our best, positive actions; to help the most vulnerable in our communities, the women and children most at risk,” explained Howard Schiffer, the founder and president of Vitamin Angels, who commissioned the poll.

While of course the pandemic resulted in 2020 being difficult for most, it’s wonderful to see how humankind responds to such disasters with positivity and a collective desire to help others.
